Dear Readers,

This is no ordinary travel blog, nor even another review site like TripAdvisor! This is a one-of-a-kind "insider guide" where you can find out what a country is really like, before you visit. Whilst most travel blogs and guides present a cozy image of friendly locals, balmy beaches and relaxed dining, the reality is often very different and based more on the local "culture" than anything else.

I have traveled and lived all over the world, 95 countries so far, and gained many valuable insights. I also studied psychology/anthropology for many years and combine that with my love of photography to capture the true "essence" of each destination. My Olympus OMD EM5 camera adds the images to exciting and provocative essays about people across the world.

You will notice that a very important aspect of this website is the discussion and general reader interaction. Your opinions and experiences are invaluable to build this into a large and invaluable directory of information about each place. Enjoy, contribute and suggest new destinations - this site is nothing without you!

USA – Hollywood, USA – What Makes A Good Movie?…

Feb 13, 2011 2 Comments by

Following hot on the heels from the list of the 90 best books I wrote about recently, someone asked me to do the same for movies so here we go but I want to pose a few questions whilst writing this list. I have chosen mostly thrillers here as I was going through a “thriller phase” about two years ago when I started this list. It serves as a good survey of waht was around at the beginning of 2009 and before. It also highlights a few things I think are important ion movies but often get missed by the Hollywood studios (or rather they choose to focus on other things facets of the movie genre that cater to the mass audience that is the US consumer these days.

Thailand – Hua Hin, Thailand – Is Hua Hin Really That Boring?…

Nov 05, 2010 No Comments by

Well they say that Hua Hin is full of golfers and Scandinavians. That is good as I like both though probably the latter a little more if push comes to shove! Anyway, I can tell you that Hua Hin is also noteworthy for several other things not at all related to the above and my short report from a recent trip might well explain and it will certainly give you the alternative take on this loooovely little fishing village…

Thailand – Bangkok, Thailand – My New Year Predictions for 2009…

Dec 21, 2008 No Comments by

The year of 2008 has been a remarkable one for the world and more so for Thailand in my opinion. Many international observers claim that the world has reached a point from which it cannot return and I believe Thailand has had an even more severe shock to the heart of its social fabric as well as its finances!

This short article is about two things: the events of 2008 and why they might have happened and the forecast for 2009 and how it might affect Thailand and its people. The focus as usual for me is on what motivates the behaviour and what effect the future will have on behaviour.

Thailand – Bangkok, Thailand – A Beginners Guide to Thai Culture…

Dec 15, 2008 No Comments by

This story is an observation on Thai culture and its people, their day-to-day behaviour and their values. It is of course subjective but it is never meant to be derogatory or to make any value judgements. I say this at the outset as it is easy to be critical of a different culture and so easy to be critical of someone like me trying to put the differences into words. Please remember these are observations not judgements…

Thailand – Bangkok, Thailand – Is Thai TV the Worst in the World?…

Oct 31, 2008 No Comments by

It’s Halloween tonight and you might wonder why this is about Thai TV! Well, the answer is simple – there is about as much realism in Thai TV programmes as a night of trick or treat… and there seem to be no end of incredible ghost stories, monsters and other fairy tale like soaps that I feel like it’s Halloween every night…
